Streaming-only releases to be eligible for Grammy Awards

Grammys will now consider streaming-only releases, this following a series of changes to the Grammy Awards.

Previously, only albums and singles on physical media were recognized. The new changes will be taking effect immediately.

Therefore music released between October 2015 and September 2016 will be considered for the upcoming 59th Grammy Awards slated for February 12, 2017. A number of artists will benefit from the new rules among them American artist Chance The Rapper who has released his mixtape Coloring Book via streaming services. Chance The Rapper went Twitter to express his gratification, terming the move a victory for artists.

Recording Academy is following in the footsteps of RIAA where in February the association announced that streams would count towards the gold and platinum certification.

Some of the popular streaming services include: Tidal, Deezer and Soundcloud among others.
