“A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone, if it is so to keep its edge.” -Tyrion Lannister, (HBO series, Game of Thrones).
It is undeniable that books ooze the rough edges of ‘whetstone’ that slowly and with delicate aromatic care sharpen the mind leaving it real with its sharp keen edge.
To sharpen the mind, Booksaves Online, an online book-lending and selling franchise in Kenya has come up with an ambitious challenge. Reading 52 books in 2016! That is at least a book per week, can you do it?
What is amazing is how the challenge has been adopted by the Booksaves Book Club. The dawn of 2016 has seen the readers dive into the books and kill the adage that; ‘If you want to hide something from an African, put it in a book’ for this team of enthusiastic minds, hiding it in a book would be the worst Idea. It is almost the third week and some of the readers are on the fourth or fifth book! “All good books have one thing in common – they are truer than if they had really happened.” -Ernest Hemingway
Fred Ojil, a budding entrepreneur, credits such possibility to having a reading discipline. He says the secret is reading an hour in the morning and another hour in the evening just before bed. An avid reader, he carries a small torch and a book in his bag. The torch comes in handy at night while in a Matatu (Passengers vehicle) when the lights are turned off.
The idea of 52 books challenge 2016 was conceived at the Booksaves Book Club event in December 19, 2015 and has started a Google drive portal to monitor the progress of the readers.
In this internet era it would be rather a tough task to change people perception, making them abandon their ‘comfortable’ world of memes and caress the book pages but, at Booksaves Online they are willing to push the boundaries. “Books are mirrors. You only see in them what you already have inside of you.” -Carlos Zafon
One of the most beautiful feelings is to be under a shade with a book in hand and an occasional chirp of the birds in the background. The serene environment and the nose-full of fresh breath creates the allure an open mind that you feel every word as a fresh drop of love and happiness while you silently salivate and turn over the new page. If you could picture the above, ‘Booksaves’ is the place to be.
“My best friend is a person who will give me a book I have not read.” –Abraham Lincoln
The world of bibliophiles is a world of the chosen few, those who live their lives knowing how refreshing a good book is, those who open up a conversation by looking you in the eye keen to know you the way they know a good book and those who have the taste buds of sound in silence as words glide over the pages. These are people who the 2016bookchallenge whets their appetites. “If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson.
‘Booksaves Online’ is the brain child of Vincent Luvita and Kristin.
