Queen Of Katwe, a film based on a true story about a Ugandan chess player is set to premier in Europe on October 9 at the Odeon Leicester Square at the 60th edition of The London Film Festival.

The film starring Oscar winner and Tony Award nominee Lupita Nyong’o is based on a story about a Ugandan girl Phiona Mutesi (Played by Madina Nalwanga) whose life changed from selling maize in the slums of Kampala after she was introduced to the game of chess by a football player turned missioner Robert Katende (Played by David Oyelowo). Her mother Harriet (Played by Lupita Nyong’o) provides the necessary family support-despite her being reluctant at the start-giving Phiona the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess player.

Disney's Queen Of Katwe was directed by Mir Nair, from a screenplay by William Wheeler and produced by Dean Plcher and John Carls. Nair also directed Salaam Bombay! (1988), Mississippi Masala (1991), Monsoon Wedding (2001) Namesake (2006), The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) among others. Queen Of Katwe will be her seventh film.

The 60th BFI London Film Festival takes place from Wednesday 5 October-Sunday 16 October 2016. The full Festival programme will be announced on Thursday 1 September 2016.

The film will open in U.S. theaters on September 23, 2016.
