The Commonwealth is set to announce shortlisted candidates for the 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize on March 31.

This year, a total of 26 names will be selected out of a pool of over 4,000 entries.

The award, which was set up in 2012, recognizes top writers from commonwealth countries who have not yet made it in the literary scene.

Submissions for the literary prize were opened in September where participants were required to submit a story of between 2500-5000 words.

The commonwealth Short Story Prize is divided into the overall winner and the regional winner categories.  The regional winners will be announced on May 4 while the overall winner will be made public in September.  The overall winner bags £5000(approx. USD7235) and the regional winner £2500(approx. USD3617).

British author Jonathan Tel won the 2015 short story prize for his piece The Human Phonograph a tale set on a nuclear base in China.

Last year’s Regional Winners were from Nigeria, India, Trinidad & Tobago, Fiji and the UK.
