Profile: Meet Tanzanian artist Localfanatics


Born Mawila Khamsini in 1978, Local Fanatics adopted the moniker because he was tired of always being referred to as a local artist. His love for art manifested in his childhood however, he would proceed take an undergraduate degree in a different field; electronics and communication.

As the burning desire to draw brewed within him, Local, as he is famously known would fold his shirt sleeves and forsook office work to concentrate on his talent. He then evolved into a brilliant graffiti and painter-a true manifestation of passion for art raw talent.

In art, his tuff is spray painting and acrylics. The versatile artist works both with canvas and presently treated wood panels. His art shows out-of-the-box-thinking with extraordinary play with his subject that leaves the audience dazzled and novices in jaw-drop apprehension.

As an artist, he has spread his wings. He not only has worked with clubs and residential homes but also with governmental and non-governmental organisation such as East Africa TV, TBC (Tanzania Broadcasting Company), Restless Development, Clouds Media Group, British Council, Alliance Francaise, Channel Ten, Star TV, Twaweza, PSI, MDH, global platform, IST (International School of Tanganyika, Oysterbay) and Azam Media Company.

To promote the arts in country Local is among the founding members of Nafasi Artspace, Wasanii Art Centre and SASART. As a patriot, he did a fully funded graffiti art project dubbed JITOKEZEE2016, to motivate his country into participating in last year’s presidential election. The project was funded by the Rosa Luxembourg Foundation.
